Experience Narrows - The Story of the Narrows Landing

In the 1800’s the Landing was an overnight stop on the Waikato River for the people on the River boat. They would come up to the Homestead next door to rest from the exhausting travel of the day.

One such traveller – Governor Grey – planted the 4 pear trees that you look out to from the Restaurant Terrace.

Brian Hermann discovered this site when asked to remove a Hay Barn from the very position where the Narrows Landing sits today.

Once up on the roof of the old barn, Brian fell in love with the site situated among twenty gum trees. He asked his friend Mark Eman if he would be willing to sell off this portion of his farm.

“Keep it Natural, Keep it Green, Keep it Forever.”

Being one of the first few “Green Developers” at that time, Brian and Deborah tried to work out how best to construct such a development without compromising the integrity of the area.

The Narrows Landing was built over a period of two years (1996-1998) using recycled electricity pylons that had previously been scrapped and buried. Only the bare minimum of plants on site were removed to make way for the build and great effort was made to retain the majority of the existing surrounding flora. Every effort was made to use recycled materials local, untreated timber has been used throughout the building to create a truly rustic environment and zinc corrugated iron used to clad the building. Many of the windows installed at The Narrows are recycled Totara that are well over 100 years old.

Throughout every aspect of our day to day operation every effort is made to use environmentally friendly products and processes. We have implemented a environmentally focused supplier chain of custody policy and we always recycle, utilising a specialised environmental cleaning system which operates throughout the property.

“The Narrows Landing, a fusion of exquisite modern cuisine, relaxed atmosphere and sophisticated LUXURY accommodation.”
